Let us glimpse the eternal. John Philip Newell. Celtic Spirituality.

_MG_5090In the temple of our inner being,
in the temple of our body,
in the temple of earth, sea and sky,
in the great temple of the universe
we look for the light that was in the beginning,
the mighty fire that blazes still from the heart of life,
glowing in the whiteness of the moon,
glistening in night stars,
hidden in the black earth,
concealed in unknown depths of our soul.
In the darkness of the night,
in the shadows of our being, O God,
let us glimpse the eternal.
In both the light and the shadow of our being
let us glimpse the glow of the eternal.

John Philip Newell, “Sounds of the Eternal: A Celtic Psalter”, 67 and 68.

In the Silence of My Heart

DSCN3614.JPGIn the silence of the morning
I am alive to the new day’s light,
alert to the early stirrings of the wind
and the first sounds of the creatures.
In the silence of my heart
I hear the yearnings that are in me and the fears,
the hopes that rise from within
and the doubts that trouble my soul.
In the beginnings of this day, O God,
before the night’s stillness is lost to the day’s busyness, open to me the treasure of my inner being
that in the midst of this day’s busyness I may draw on wisdom.

Assure me again of my origins in you,
assure me again that my true depths are of you.

To the Home of Peace

IMG_4728To the home of peace

to the field of love

to the land where forgiveness and right relationship meet

we look, O God,

with longing for earth’s children

with compassion for the creatures

with hearts breaking for the nations and people we love.

Open us to visions we have never known

strengthen us for self-givings we have never made

delight us with a oneness we could never have imagined

that we may truly be born of You

makers of peace.

For the Grace of New Beginnings

photoGlory be to you, O God,
for the gift of life
unfolding through those who have gone before me.
Glory be to you, O God,
for your life planted within my soul
and in every soul coming into the world.
Glory be to you, O God,
for the grace of new beginnings
placed before me in every moment and encounter of life.
Glory, glory, glory
for the grace of new beginnings in every moment of life.

John Philip Newell, Celtic Benediction ; Morning and Night Prayer, 61-65

Let me be set free by love

That wisdom was born with me in the womb
thanks be to you, O God.
That your ways have been written into
the human body and soul
there to be read and reverenced
thanks be to you.
Let me be attentive
to the truths of these living texts.
Let me learn
of the law etched into the whole of creation
that gave birth to the mystery of life
and feeds and renews it day by day.
Let me discern the law of love in my own heart
and in knowing it
obey it.
Let me be set free by love, O God.
Let me be set free to love.

Let Us Protect the Peace

photoGive us peace in our days, O God.

Let us live in harmony with one another.

Let us care for the earth and its creatures.

Let us be true as nations.

Let us guard one another’s dignity.

And let us protect the peace that belongs to the whole of creation.

Thanks Be to You

In lives where love has been born this dayPrayingwiththeEarth-2_thumb

thanks be to you, O God.

In families where forgiveness has been strong

thanks be to you.

In nations where wrongs have been addressed

where tenderness has been cherished

and where visions for earth’s oneness have been served

thanks be to you.

May those who are weary find rest this night.

May those who carry great burdens for their people find strength.

May the midwives of new beginnings in our world find hope.

And may the least among us find greatness

strength in our souls

worth in our words

love in our living.

Glory Prayer

In the light of the high heavenssounds of eternal.img_assist_custom-125x200
and the infinity of dawnings in space,
in the darkness of ocean depths
and the sea’s ceaseless waves,
in the glistening of a creature’s eyes
and the dark life-blood that ever flows,
in every emanation of creation’s life
and the warmth that moves my body,
in the inner universe of the soul
and its everlasting foundations
your glory glows, O God.
In every shining of the world’s inwardness
and the warmth that moves my everliving soul your glory glows.

Earth Blessing

On this dayDSCN1542.JPG

the blessings of heaven.

On this day

the blessings of earth.

On this day

the blessings of sea and of sky.

To open us to life

to ground us in life

to fill us with life

and with wonder.

On those we love this day

and on every human family

the blessings of heaven

the blessings of earth

the blessings of sea and of sky.

Prayer for Guidance

At the heart of life and in its heights glory shines.Screen Shot 2014-02-05 at 2.21.45 PM

Within creation and beyond

glory has its source.

Guide me to the heart of life

that I may know its heights.

Lead me further within, O God,

that I may know you as beyond.

In the sufferings of my heart

and the brokenness of creation

open to me further

the doors of the eternal

that through the pain that is within me and the struggles that are around me

I may be guided to you as the heart of life,

that through the pain that is within me and the struggles that are around me

I may be guided to you as in and beyond all

that has life.
