Iona Pilgrimage Scholarship

Application Deadline Past

Each year Heartbeat provides scholarships to make attending the Iona Pilgrimage with John Philip accessible to all. Our goal is to deepen an individual’s spiritual journey and to ground, sustain, and enhance their efforts towards healing and transformation in their own unique context.

Heartbeat is pleased to be able to offer scholarships for this offering of the Iona Pilgrimage, on the Isle of Iona, Scotland, from April 25 – May 2, 2020.

The award amount for this scholarship is £1,315. The scholarship award covers the following:

– Lodging for seven nights at the St. Columba Hotel in a double occupancy room. Recipients will be asked to share a room with another scholarship recipient.
– Breakfast and dinner each day (lunch is not provided).
– The pilgrimage and teaching program provided by John Philip Newell.

Funds will be transferred directly to the St. Columba Hotel in the successful applicants’ names.

We only consider applicants with significant financial need for scholarship awards.

Additional costs to the scholarship recipient include:

– Transportation* to and from the St. Columba Hotel on the Isle of Iona, Argyll, Scotland.
– $10.00 application fee

*In cases where applicants need additional financial assistance in traveling to Iona, a $500 travel stipend can be awarded to accompany the scholarship. Only recipients of the scholarship will be considered for the travel stipend, and both must be applied for at the same time. We will not be able to provide additional travel assistance once all scholarships have been awarded.  You can apply for a travel stipend through the button above.

To apply, please complete our online application and have a mentor, teacher, or spiritual leader complete our online reference form by the application deadline of February 1, 2020. Heartbeat’s Selection Committee will review all applications after the submission deadline has passed and will notify all applicants of their status by February 15, 2020.

If you would also like to apply for a $500 travel stipend to assist you financially in getting to Iona, you can apply for that using this online form. This application must also be received by the application deadline of February 1.

Please note there is a $10.00 application fee to be paid at the time your application is submitted.

Each day on Iona begins and ends with the rhythm of prayer and meditation together. In the mornings, John Philip Newell teaches on Celtic themes of Earth and Soul as sacred and invites us into the holy work of contemplation and action as the basis for transformation in our lives and world. The afternoons are given to hiking, conversation, and rest, and the early evenings to further reflection and meditative chanting in the 11-century Chapel of St Oran. One day, we walk the nine-mile island pilgrimage route (see below) together to pray for the journey of our lives and world.
