The Heartbeat Border Pilgrimage is spiritual, educational, and action-oriented experience in El Paso, Texas, and Cuidad Juárez, Mexico. Through prayer, ritual, learning and volunteering this group will expand understanding about border communities, stand in solidarity, and join the movement for immigrant justice. Our experienced partners at Hope Border Institute have assisted in preparing activities, teachings, and various opportunities on both sides of the border to deepen resolve for engaging in advocacy and relief response.

Each day will include a rhythm of contemplative practice, engaging learning and outreach environments, guided reflection and dialogue.

Scholarship Application Process

Please note there is a $10.00 application fee to be paid at the time your application is submitted.

Each year Heartbeat provides scholarships to make attending a pilgrimage accessible to all. Our goal is to deepen an individual’s spiritual journey and to ground, sustain, and enhance their efforts towards healing and transformation in their own unique context.

Heartbeat is pleased to be able to offer scholarships for the 2019 Border Pilgrimage in El Paso, TX / Ciudad Juárez, México. The award amount for this scholarship varies depending on the applicant’s financial need, but can go up to a maximum of $525.00. Successful scholarship applicants will be required to pay the remaining registration fee. Scholarship awards and registration fee together cover

  • Lodging in El Paso, Texas, from May 2 – 8, 2019
  • Meals with the exception of lunch each day and two dinners (approximately $80 total)
  • Transportation in El Paso and Ciudad Juárez
  • Border Pilgrimage program, led by Ben Lindwall and Ilka Vega

Applications and references must be submitted by March 20, 2019.
Applicants will be notified of their status by March 22, 2019.

Please have medical history information available for filling out the application to help us ensure that selected participants are physically and mentally able to complete this pilgrimage. Please be aware that the co-leaders of this trip practice spiritual accompaniment, have experience leading wilderness trips, and are certified in First Aid but are not medical or mental health professionals. A brief phone interview is also required once the application is submitted. All selected participants will be required to provide proof of insurance and emergency contact information and sign Heartbeat’s Release and Indemnification Waiver and purchase travel insurance (if not included in current policy).

Please note that we only consider applicants with significant financial need for scholarship awards.
